The Newfoundland and Labrador Women's Institutes grew out of a Service League that was formed following the great tidal wave that swept the South Coast in 1929.. The original objective was to help victims of that disaster.. The Jubilee Guilds of newfoundand was formally organized from that Service League.. The objective of the Jubilee Guilds was to help improve the quality of life in rural areas through education, crafts and service.. Jubilee Guilds joined the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) in 1945 and the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada (FWIC) in 1951.. The name changed to Women’s Institutes in 1968 and the emphasis changed to include more  ...   for women to work together to expand their skills, broaden their interests, plan meetings, workshops and conferences, and strengthen the quality of life for themselves, their families and their communities.. The NLWI is a non-partisan, non-sectarian, non-racial organization.. Structure.. The structure of the organization begins in the branches at the community level and in the districts at the regional level.. At the provincial level, the organization Is governed by a twenty-five-member board voted into office by the membership for a period of three years.. NLWI partners with the Government of Newfoundland Labrador (Dept.. of Environment) and the Multi Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) to administer the awarding of the Newfoundland Labrador Environment Awards.. These are awarded in June of each year to deserving individuals and/or groups who have been nominated and then evaluated by a selection committee..     Descriptive info: Scholarships.. The NLWI scholarship is available to students, male or female who have completed grade 12.. Applicants do not need to have a Women’s Institute connection.. High school marks, a short essay and letters of reference must be included with the application.. Application Form.. 2011 NLWI Scholarship Winner Luke Welsh.. Luke is a resident of Spaniard's Bay and graduated with Honors from Ascension Collegiate.. Luke is presently attending Memorial University where he is completing courses in the Faculty of Music.. NLWI is pleased with the high academic achievement presented by candidates who applied for scholarships.. 2010 NLWI Scholarship Winner Gregory Bailey.. Gregory is a resident of Gander and attended Gander Collegiate and is presently attending University of New Brunswick, Fredericton Campus working towards a Bachelor of Science, Engineering.. This year we were very pleased to receive fourteen applications for our scholarship; eight from females and six from males.. The geographical areas covered were Labrador, Port au Port, Central, Conception Bay North, Marystown, Southern Shore, and St.. John’s and surrounding areas.. All 14 applicants were excellent but there was one exceptional.. Most of his grades  ...   1st place in Canada, for the Begbie Canadian History Contest and was Provincial Gold Medalist for Sun Life Open Mathematics Contest, not once, but twice.. He has played on numerous high school teams such as volleyball and basketball but has excelled in cross-country running and other activities.. When participating in the Nfld.. Lab.. Summer and Winter games and also in the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Games he earned 2nd 3rd place in relay, 3rd place in high jump and three track field medals.. He has participated in school and community public speaking competitions, held leadership roles in Nfld.. Youth Parliament, served as President of the Student Council and was school representative at the Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies Conference.. Even though he has just finished High School he has an impressive resume of Volunteer experience including the Cancer Society Relay for Life as both a participant and a fundraiser, the tutoring of friends and fellow students and as a member of the Gander Community Youth Network, and these are just a few.. Our three member committee diligently reviewed all applications and was unanimous in its decision..
