Descriptive info: Upcoming Events.. MAY 5th, onward.. Thanks A Million!.. 1,000,000 Penny Drive Fundraiser for Eastern Edge Gallery.. Build an artwork while building community.. In their March 2012 budget, the Canadian Government announced that, as a cost saving measure, later this year the Canadian penny will be withdrawn from circulation and no longer minted.. The Canadian penny will cease to exist.. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said “the penny is a currency without any currency in Canada”, however, Canadian artists and artist run centres know only too well the value of a penny because we've always had to pinch them.. Show your support for artist-run-culture in Newfoundland and Labrador by donating your spare pennies to Eastern Edge Gallery.. Art has currency.. Community has currency.. Count your pennies and our dollars will count themselves.. From May 5th onwards, pile your pennies on the floor of Eastern Edge Gallery, 72 Harbour Drive, St.. John's, Newfoundland.. Or,  ...   of Canada's most iconic works of contemporary art: Gerald Ferguson's 1,000,000 Pennies, 1979.. Every cent donated will be gratefully appreciated -- the spare change in your pocket, the contents of your change jar, or even 10,000 pennies ($100) -- and will go towards sustaining our programming that includes exhibiting contemporary Canadian and international art, as well as encouraging dedicated, rigorous activity locally and fostering community and a meaningful context for artistic activity.. When we collect 1,000,000 pennies we will have raised $10,000 for artist-run-culture.. Then, we'll have a rolling party and various other amazingly fun activities.. Thanks a million!!!.. above photo:.. Gerald Ferguson.. Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, 1937 - 2009, Halifax, Nova Scotia.. 1,000,000 Pennies, 1979.. One million Canadian pennies.. Dimensions variable..
