The Corner Brook Museum Archives Society, the governing body of the museum, is a non-profit organization whose statement of purpose is to research, collect, document, preserve, interpret and exhibit the natural, cultural, and social history of Corner Brook and the Bay of Islands.. About the Museum.. The building itself is an artifact and it was constructed in 1925.. During it's early days, the building housed the town's Magistrate's Office/Court Room, Post Office and Customs, and the Telegraph Office.. The ground floor windows are still secured with bars - reminiscent of the holding cells that once held people awaiting their Court appearance, and also to safeguard cargo in customs.. On December 8th, 1997, the building was re-opened as the Corner Brook Museum and Archives.. Today, Corner Brook's heritage is celebrated and preserved through the efforts of the Corner Brook  ...   the built heritage of Newfoundland.. On September 15, 2001, the Corner Brook Museum and Archives building was designated a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.. Services and Activities.. Guided Tours (in English and French).. An Information Center.. Community Archives.. Research Services.. Education Programs and Lectures.. Reception Facilities.. Children's Activities and Day-Camps (during the summer months).. Wheelchair Accessible.. Hours of Operation.. June 30 to August 31 - 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (7 days a week).. September 1 to June 29 - 9:00 am to 4:30 pm (Monday to Friday).. Closed: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday.. Admission Fees (in Canadian currency).. Adults - $5.. 00.. Students - $3.. Children under 12 years of age - Free when accompanied by an adult.. The Coat of Arms, visible above the main entrance.. Membership dues enable the Museum to remain open year-round, carry out educational programs for school children, assist conservation activities, conduct research, and mount new exhibits and displays.. Entitled to attend special Members Only functions and all exhibit openings and museum receptions.. Free admission to the museum.. Entered into the museum mailing list.. Entitled to a 10% discount on all museum merchandise.. Entitled to vote at annual general meetings.. Membership Categories.. There are 2 membership categories; Individual and Corporate, with several levels of membership in each.. The Individual Membership levels:.. Student:.. Many of our exhibits focus on the development of various industries in the area, such as the pulp and paper industry, forestry/logging and the fishery, and their effects in the shaping of the surrounding lives and communities.. Other exhibits focus on the military history of the region, the aboriginal presence in this part of the island, as well as the area's cultural, social and natural history..     Descriptive info: VOLUNTEERING.. The Corner Brook Museum and Archives relies heavily on its volunteers to assist in the delivery of its programs.. Volunteers are trained so interaction with visitors creates a sense of achievement and satisfaction.. There is opportunity for personal growth through training, social contacts and various cultural and historical events.. Students can learn skills and work habits that will serve them well in the future.. Retired people can find a new niche or revive forgotten skills, maintaining that sense of involvement  ...   to specific projects, as requested by the curator.. To handle these requests, the Coordinator has a database with pertinent information on registered volunteers, along with their skills and interests.. When a request is made, volunteers are contacted and, if they are interested and possess the qualifications, they are assigned to the project..
